Hello breakfast folks!

I suggest you grab a copy of the Portland Mercury this week, and not just because I’m in it. They have a series of articles in their “breakfast issue,” the theme of which is basically, waiting in line is for dopes.

The intro is here, or you can skip straight to the articles themselves:

Oh, let’s get this out of the way first. They interviewed me about waiting in line and how to avoid it, but I’ll never get used to seeing my face that big anywhere in print. Yikes. And it’s pretty obvious the interview was in email rather than in person, because nobody talks the way I wrote that piece.

Otherwise, they did a fun thing on dumpster-diving for breakfast ingredients (and came up with some good ideas, but dumpsters are not for me.) There’s also a summary of breakfast food carts that reminds me how hard it is to keep up with that crowd, as well as a trip to the Acropolis and their “legendary” steaks. Yes, legendary steaks at a stripper bar. Although, if steak and eggs are really $7, I am curious.

Pho in the Morning is a nice tip of the hat to the Asian spots around town; as Nick Zukin once told me on my podcast, pho is mainly a morning thing.

They also hit bakeries and dives.

And finally, they got into the lines debate with suggestions for good places without lines – although I beg to differ on the Cameo — and they suggest places that take reservations.

All in all, a fine job by them, and I am happy to have been a part of it. Next time just run the pho a little smaller, eh?
